Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office says phone scammer poses as law enforcement to solicit money
Sullivan County Sheriff, Jeff Cassidy, says a scammer is calling residents and identifying their self as law enforcement or county government workers, in order to solicit funds for missing jury duty. Names this scammer identifies as are Sheriff Cassidy, Circuit Court Clerk Bobby Russell, Captain Andy Seabolt, or District Attorney Barry Staubus. The scammer does not accept traditional forms of payment such as check, cash, or card. They will demand the victim purchase a pre-paid money card and then ask for the card numbers over the phone. The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office says they will never settle payments this way, and any calls of this type received should be reported to the sheriff’s office.
