Kingsport BOE votes to approve random drug tests for extracurricular students
The Kingsport Board of Education approved on first reading a random drug testing policy for high school students who participate in extracurricular activities that include athletics, cheerleading and spirit, competitive band, clubs, student leadership positions and more. If a student tests positive, they would not be suspended or expelled from school solely because of the positive test. The superintendent would be tasked with developing a process for randomly selecting students to be tested. Board members discussed whether the school system could also drug test homeschooled students who participate in extracurricular activities with an attorney informing the board THAT it could not. The board voted to advance the proposal and the policy will need to be approved on second reading to be officially adopted and put into place.
