UPDATE: Richlands coach seen in viral video charged with assault by police

The head girl’s basketball coach of Richlands High School has been charged with misdemeanor assault and battery following his actions during a VHSL playoff game last week.

Tom Rife was seen in a video that has been viewed over 260,000 times on Facebook jumping the bench area during a timeout and strong-arming a man who was identified as a player’s stepfather.

Richlands Chief of Police Ron Holt said the charge was brought after interviewing witnesses and submitting evidence to the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office in Tazewell County.
