Sullivan County School Leaders Will Ask Legislature To Reverse State Law On Third Grade Retention
The Sullivan County School Board is joining Kingsport City Schools in opposing a new state law that will retain third graders who don’t score proficient on the annual TCAP Test. The board votes six to one in favor of sending a resolution to the General Assembly asking lawmakers to change their minds on a controversial law passed in the last General Assembly session. Sullivan County School officials say while the goal of all third graders being proficient isn’t a bad idea, the approach of being retained on the outcome of one test doesn’t take into the account the reality students, teachers, parents, and school systems face.
