Multiple fire departments battle major fire at former Virginia Intermont campus
Firefighters were on the scene of a large fire on the former Virginia Intermont College campus in Bristol VA early Friday. Additional buildings on the campus also caught fire, and crews were still on scene as of 9 a.m. this morning. A total of five buildings were involved in the blaze. Bristol, Virginia police and firefighters, as well as more than a dozen nearby fire departments from both Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee, are on the scene. One firefighter was sent to the hospital with chest pains. Elementary schools in the Bristol Virginia Public Schools district were closed on Friday, and middle and high school students were on a two-hour delay. Several roads are closed as crews are still working the scene. The area of Oakview Ave and MLK Jr. Dr is closed, as well as Moore St, Russel St, Lester St, Buchanan St and MLK Jr. Drive to Mary St. Officials are still asking the public to avoid the area.
