FEMA workers harassed in Carter County

Saturday, volunteers witnessed an armed group of people on side-by-sides confronting and threatening FEMA workers in the Elk Mills community of Carter County. Workers were in Carter County at the request of the Elk Mills Volunteer Fire Department to help run the command center there, providing supplies and resources. A witness said the group was frustrated, and helped to defuse the situation. Once the group realized that FEMA wasn’t taking away donations and that the command center was staffed by volunteers, they left and returned later with donations. Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley is working to get a sub-station operational in the community, on the site of the washed-away fire department. Two deputies will be stationed there around the clock where they’ll work and sleep. FEMA will remain in the region working with those flood victims.
