Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford to run for third term
Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford has announced he will seek a third term in office and officially placed his name in May’s Republican primary.
Lunceford was first elected in 2014 and earned the nomination by defeating incumbent Chris Mathes in that year’s primary. Prior to his election, Lunceford worked in law enforcement in Johnson City and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
So far two candidates have announced to run against Lunceford in 2022—former Gate City police chief Kim Birchfield and former Sheriff’s Office lieutenant Mike Fraley.
