BVPD warns of another phone scam involving officers
The Bristol, Virginia Police Department is warning the public of a circulating phone scam it is investigating that involves “large amounts of money.” A release from the agency said the scam comes just weeks after the department had to investigate a different phone scam. Area residents have reported getting calls from someone claiming to be an officer with the BVPD — most recently using the police chief’s name — advising the victim had missed court, failed to pay a fine, or another legal violation. Police Department officials say they NEVER make telephone calls to solicit money for any reason and said that anyone who receives a call like this should notify their local law enforcement agency.
