Body found in Avery County in debris identified

The Avery County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a body found along the North Toe River was that of a Northeast Tennessee man who had been missing since Hurricane Helene. The sheriff’s office said the medical examiner in Raleigh has identified the body as that of 66 year old Russell Wilbur of Telford. Wilbur and his wife, Charlene, were camping at the Buck Hill Campground in Avery County when their camper was swept into the Toe River. Charlene Wilbur’s body was recovered on October 24 in the Ingalls community. A debris clean-up crew found the remains Friday near Bent Road in the Ingalls Community.
