It’s true stripes: Bristol Motor Speedway walls go retro

The mettle of drivers, rookies and seasoned veterans, is tested with every trip to the high banks of Bristol.

You could say they are earning their stripes.

Bristol Motor Speedway is getting a new coat of stripes for next month’s Food City 500 with old time flair. The red and white stripes return to the turns and straightaways to aid the track’s plan to go retro for the event.

BMS announced last year that March’s 500 laps would be the culmination of throwback weekend with classic uniforms and historical paint schemes and logos as a tip of the cap to grocery store chain Food City’s three decades of sponsorship.

NASCAR Cup Champion and car owner Brad Keselowski and drivers Zane Smith and Erik Jones flew in Thursday and had the honor of laying down the first coat on the frontstretch wall. Keselowski was also in town for rain tire testing and took several laps around the Coliseum.

The Food City 500 weekend will be different with no early season visit from the Xfinity Series drivers. Instead, the NASCAR Truck Series gets Saturday, March 16 all to themselves with a night race followed by Sunday’s event on the 17th.
