Local School System Using Model For Teachers When Restraining Student’s With Disabilities

Some parents of student’s with disabilities in a Northern Virginia school system recently won a lawsuit over the treatment their children received while being disciplined in school. Bristol Virginia Public School teachers are trained to intervene appropriately when a student with disabilities behavior might warrant appropriate teacher restraint. Dr. Megan de Nobriga is the Director of Special Ed for BVPS and says Bristol’s School system uses a training model for teachers to follow when confronted with a student’s behavior which might result in seclusion or restraint of the student to prevent a similar situation from occurring in Bristol. As a result of that lawsuit, Fairfax County Public Schools will ban all seclusion practices and curtail it use of physical restraint for student’s with disabilities.
